The expansion of UNESCO’s pledge comes at a most critical time, the time that tourism face’s the aftermath of the global pandemic and the impact of the climate change. At this point, travelers’ environmental awareness and demand for sustainability practices in tourism progressively increase.

As Erensto Ottore R., UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture stated: “Tourism offers life-changing opportunities for communities to promote and protect their local culture. The Sustainable Travel Pledge is particularly timely as we work to build a new kind of tourism in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, by inviting local tourism stakeholders to commit to inclusive and sustainable measures. The UNESCO Sustainable Tourism Pledge promotes responsible practices, of properties that are committed to taking actions that will preserve and protect the environment, including detailing efforts to:

  • Reduce single-use and other plastics
  • Support local communities and culture
  • Reduce waste
  • Improve energy usage and efficiency, and
  • Improve water conservation & management
